A collaboration between International Programs and the Nursing Program to better serve and educate international and nursing students. This project will assist in meeting cultural education requirements of the Nursing program needed for accreditation, prepare students for practice, and provide additional support for the international students. Additionally, this project may assist in securing additional grant funding for the college.
International students often find their time at an American college challenging due to language skills, lack of context, and cultural differences. The availability of a cultural mentor throughout the year as issues arise is hugely beneficial as this is likely the first time these students have lived without family. The goal for these students is to provide a resource for them in an unfamiliar country. To provide a mentor who can help them navigate the health care system, answer questions about their health, and offer support during a stressful time in their life. In addition, nursing mentors provide basic education on ways to eat healthy, cope with stress and increase their well-being throughout their time here in the U.S.
The goal is to give nursing students the opportunity to increase cultural awareness and practice community health education. Through the mentor project and coordinating health workshops nursing students are able to teach and train international students to:
1) Be healthier through basic nutrition, disease prevention, wellness and self-care.
2) Understand the basic parameters of their health insurance while staying in the U.S.
3) Learn coping mechanisms for stress and anxiety.
4) Develop relationships with American students
5) Navigate the health resources available to them in the community
Benefits for Nursing Students:
1. Assignment credit for senior project topic.
2. Hands on/experiential cross-cultural experience of culturally sensitive nursing practices.
3. Enhances individual's value when seeking employment post-graduation.
4. Opportunity to gain confidence in practicing therapeutic communication.
5. Resumé-boosting certificate
Benefits for International Students
1. Improved health and wellness of students.
2. Decreased number of rejected insurance claims.
3. Better comprehension of US health and medical resources.
4. Increased visibility of international students.
